How to fix the pedal assist on your e-bike?

How to fix the pedal assist on your e-bike?

Everything you should know about a Pedal Assist System (PAS)

Typically Electric bikes have two types of motor engagement: the throttle and the pedal assist. The motor takes part only when the pedals revolve with pedal assist. But the throttle takes part in the engine even when you’re not pedalling. The exciting thing is that Europe does not allow e-bikes with throttles. So every bike should have a pedal assist mode.

What is a pedal assist?

PAS is the main feature which is the operation mode on e-bikes. When the pas is activated, the motor boots when you are pedalling. The PAS assists you in pedalling. The different pas settings will help you pedal effortlessly on long rides at the desired speed. When the PAS is on, you would feel extra energy moving you forward, which makes it easier to ride your bikes on long journeys without getting exhausted.

How does the PAS work?

The PAS uses a cadence sensor to assist in pedalling. It builds into the drivetrain of the bike. The sensor monitors the rotation of the pedals when you are pedalling. Then it sends an alert to the ebike motor and mentions how much help to give based on your selected assistance level.

How do the PAS and throttle work?

The most pleasing thing about an e-bike is that you get to select if you’re down for a workout or to relax. So an e-bike gives freedom to the riders, which is lacking in regular bikes. You will be able to ride for longer and farther with the assistance of the throttle and PAS. You can ride faster on an e-bike rather than on a standard bike.

What is a throttle?

The throttle mode is very much comparable to a scooter/motorcycle. When it takes part, the motor gives the power and moves the bike forward. That will provide you with energy with no automatic help involved. The throttle permits you to stay calm and enjoy your ride. If you’re looking for a voyage, you can relax as the bike can operate without you pedalling. You can use the throttle when passing others on a path or speeding up the hill, or stable yourself as you’re about to go on a ride.

Pedal assist bikes VS throttle bikes

There are many differences between a pedal assist system and a throttle. Some may be advantageous, while others are disadvantageous. So you must check all the pros and cons of the throttle and the PAS and consider what is best for you.

Let’s start with the pros and cons of pedal-assist bikes.

Pros ;

  • The pedal-assist e-bikes offer a natural feeling for the riders if they are intimate with riding regular bikes.
  • It helps the riders to have a free ride without worrying about whether the throttle is in the correct position. You can ride for long journeys freely when you pedal.
  • The function of PAS is more suitable for the riders who identify throttle e-bikes as heavy.
  • By using pedal assist bikes, you can cover the targeted miles more productively.

Cons ;

  • Some countries have rules when using pedal-assist e-bikes, which limitate the use of them among the citizens. But class 1 pedelecs are allowable so you can use them instead.
  • The e-bikes can be at different prices depending on their brands and models. But the most expensive is the pedal-assist e-bikes. It is more costly than throttle bikes.
  • You might find it challenging to ride a pedal-assist e-bike in traffic. Their function of abrupt acceleration is not very effective in riding in traffic. So pedal assist bikes are dangerous for consumption in towns full of people and vehicles.
  • The poor cadence sensor used in pedal assist can destroy the performance of your bike.

Let’s take check the pros and cons of throttle electric bikes;

Pros ;

  • It is easier to navigate, and you won’t have trouble riding in busy towns and traffic. Most throttle bikes have a boost button that helps you change the speed. So you can quickly decrease the speed on a busy road and also be able to increase the speed on inactive roads whenever you want to.
  • The most pleasing thing about the throttle e-bikes is that you can ride without pedalling. So throttle bikes are more flexible than pedal assist bikes.
  • THrottle bikes are very much helping if you choose between riding along hills or fun rides.

Cons ;

  • The modulation of a throttle bike can be poor or good. If there’s a good modulation, the riders can generate more power. But if there’s poor modulation, there can be a change in the power or speed. So a throttle e-bike is not a good option for a beginner.
  • There is a limited battery range to the throttle bikes usually. So the drive should be with additional care to prevent it from any harm.
  • In throttle bikes, the gears are not that adjustable to some local conditions because of the hub motors used in them.

The PAS or the throttle is better?

The throttle and Pedal assist has the same outcome on a bike that moves it ahead using electric power. The difference depends on how the rider links with the system. So the answer to this question is some hoe complicated. You should consider what your intention is before riding your bike. If you are looking forward to a relaxing ride where you can sit back and relish the scenery, you must use the throttle. But if you’re looking forward to a good workout and active pedalling, you must use the pedal assist. Mostly the bikes only have one of the two options, but some brands might have both the throttle and PAS. Ex; peageo has throttle and PAS on their bike models. It is very beneficial as it allows you to use both control methods to choose to relax or work out when you want to.

There are two types of sensors for pedal assists

  1. speed sensor
  2. torque sensor

Before you make any purchase, you should consider the difference between these two.

  • Speed sensors

The speed sensor gives a push to your bike when you start to pedal. When you begin pedalling, it carries on with helping you pedal based on the chosen setting. So you can ride around or do a little exercise with little armpit on physical effort.

When you increase the energy, the bike will feel like it’s riding itself without your help. So you can shift the gears and reduce the service to feel your pedalling again. The speed sensor can be detached when your bike reaches the top speed.

  • Torque sensors

Torque sensors are a little bit more progressive in their function. But rather than stabilizing based on your pedal assist like a cadence sensor, the torque gives you corresponding assistance depending on how dense your pedalling is. So if you pedal harder, it will provide more power to the motor. Torque sensors are present in a few Pedego models. EX:  Ridge Rider and Platinum

Nevertheless, if you have which type of assist sensor, the PAS will always help you to ride farther and longer. It also flattens hills and makes riding mostly effortless, withstanding any road you have ahead.

There are some issues that you might face with the pedal assist system cadence sensor. The details about how to fix those problems are as follows,

  • The bike will stop moving due to some issues in the parts as follows
  • rear or front brake issue

You might encounter a situation where your bike stops moving ultimately whilst pressing the crank. There are several reasons for this problem.

The rear or front brakes can be a problem because they are always working. So the motor will close and stop working even if you press the crank so many times that the bike won’t move. You can do a test to fix this issue: disconnecting the front and rear cable and clutching the crank to the right hand. You can do this with the rear brake too.

If the motor proceeds to move when the front and rear brakes stop, then the issue might be in the detached brakes. You can also decide if the PAS stops working because of the brakes or not by this. If the break lamps work continuously without stooping, the issue is in the rakes, which avoid motor movement.

  • magnet issues

  • The most popular reason for the pedal-assist cadence is that THe agent next to the sensor is far from it. It causes the sensor to be adequate to measure the magnet movements, and the sensor won’t deliver the signals to the controller that makes the motor move. To fix this issue, there should be a minimum distance ( below 3mm) between the sensor and the magnet.
  • Another problem that arises in the magnets that stop the bike from moving is that there might be dirt or mud on the magnet. This will prevent the sensor from sensing the movements of the magnet. To fix this issue, you have to clean the magnet excellently.

Sensor cable issue

Another problem with the pedal assist system that stops it from functioning is not connecting the sensor and controller cable. To fix this issue, you must check whether the cable is connected correctly or not broken. Before that, you can measure the potential difference using a tester,

throttle issue

If your bike has a PAS and a throttle, there can be an issue with the throttle that can have an effect on the PAS’ operations. So you must check that it doesn’t happen frequently. If you want to find out if the issue is with the throttle or the PAS, you should disconnect the cable of the throttle and aim for the PAS. If your bike start moving, then the throttle is the one that has issues.

Bike cut out during increasing PAS Speed.

The e-bike can cut off when you increase the speed of the pedal assist. It is proof that the sensor or the battery installation is wrong. That stops the sensor from delivering a signal to the controller. To fix this problem, you should install the magnet and the sensor correctly. You can use cable tires to install the magnet and the sensor.

The benefits of using pedal-assist e-bikes

The pedal-assist feature is the main reason for the bikes’ popularity among the people and the price getting cheaper.

Here are some advantages of using an e-bike instead of other modes of transportation.

  1. You will be able to ride further

The pedal assist system in your e-bike helps you to ride for extended distances without getting exhausted. It limits the physical effort you have to apply when riding a standard bike.

  1. You will be able to personalize your riding experience

The pedal assist system is optional and personalised to your liking. So you can choose to balance between using your physical effort, or you can just have a relaxing journey. If you want to be somewhere within a limited time but are too fed up to pedal, the pedal assist system would greatly help save your time and energy.

  1. More people will tend to ride bikes

The pedal assist system is very beneficial for people with less physical power. For example, older people and people who have several injuries. It will help those in need to have a relaxing journey and be able to ride a bike and enjoy the trip without any physical effort. And it is for people who live in hill countries because there are more mountains that you will face to ride, but you will be able to do it without any energy.

  1. They are faster than other transportation modes

t is much faster than different modes and will help you reach your destination without exhausting yourself. The courier services are on board with the installation of the bikes as it is much faster

 In conclusion;

The standard rule is that you can solve the problems of a pedal assist system by ensuring a distance between the sensor and the magnet that is explicitly set. Some parts of the bike influenced the work of the pedal assist system. Ex: front and rear brakes/ throttle.

Should I insure my electric bike?

Should I insure my electric bike?

Different countries follow different rules and legislation. Some legally binding laws may sometimes be illegal in other countries. According to the beliefs and cultural aspects of their own countries, rules vary.

As electric bikes are classified into different classes, laws differ. It determines where you can ride.

  • Class 1

These types of electric bikes have pedal assist only. The electric motor of the bike activates only when pedalling. You don’t have to pedal hard to make the throttle work, you can choose low gear and pedal with less effort.

These electric bikes share the path with traditional bikes. Electric bikes can use bike lanes and bike paths. These types of bikes fall under the classification of bicycles.

  • Class 2

Though they have the same speed limit of 20m/h, the throttle works without pedaling. You can choose to pedal-assist your bike or control the bike with the throttle or both.

These electric bikes too can share the bicycle’s lane and ride in place bicycle riding places like parks.

  • Class 3

These types of electric bikes may have a throttle or maybe not, and the speed limit is 28m/h. Most countries allow this type of bike on road lanes or bike-only lanes but are restricting the bike to ride in bicycle lanes.

Most countries have similar rules, and they may vary depending on the laws of that country. Know the rules before you buy your electric bike.

In most countries, there are no age restrictions as to who can ride electric bikes and who can not. There are age restrictions and the need for helmets to ride electric bikes. But in many countries, they do not have age restrictions or need for a helmet.

Importance of insurance

With the increase in needs and wants for automobiles, we can see vehicles everywhere. Different brands with their unique features, invents and develop their automobiles, thus creating a craze for them among people. With the increase in automobiles, the need for more infrastructure to increases to avoid crashes between vehicles.

Automobiles are expensive and it costs a lot to even replace parts. It is a fear of every automobile owner for even a scratch to appear. Not only do these automobiles have to be careful inroads but nature too can harm them. Extreme weather like; storms, floods, earthquakes, etc. can damage vehicles or their parts.

Due to the parts of the vehicle being expensive, there are chances for theft and vandalism. These extra expenses might make one wonder about the need for extra finance. This is where insurance come in as a savior.

The origin of insurance can be dated back to the Babylonian era. But the first modern insurance was introduced by Nicholas Barbon, in 1666. The Great Fire that occurred in London, destroyed more than 30, 000 houses. This insurance system was formed following the tragic fire, providing financial aid for fire accidents.

Insurance evolved and other forms of coverage were introduced; accidents, theft, and loss due to natural disasters and life insurance are among them. Though insurance is an established business, it changes to meet the need of the consumers. But no insurance was mandatory. It was later in the 20th century, that vehicle insurance became obligatory.

Automobile owners may face financial hardship when their automobiles are vitiated, due to accidents or natural disasters that can not be avoided. Even if the accidents were not the fault of the owner of the vehicle, they still suffer. Insurance provides financial aid here by repairing or replacing the damaged parts of the vehicle. And also cover the other parties involved.

Different packages charge differently and provide various coverages. Main automobile coverages are as follows:

  • Comprehensive insurance

This is the insurance that covers your automobile in case of damages due to non-collision accidents. Damages due to fire, flood, falling of trees, earthquakes, rainstorms, vandalism, and theft come under this policy.

But this does not cover the damages due to collision, damaging the other party’s vehicle due to colliding, or medical expenses of the owner or the passengers after the accident.

Comprehensive insurance is optional if you own the vehicle. But if the vehicle is using a lease or finance service, it becomes mandatory to get this insurance coverage.

This is the insurance policy almost everyone applies for as it covers the vehicle and will be repaired or replaced if it is damaged.

There is a deductible amount that the owner of the vehicle has to select when purchasing an insurance policy. Deducting this amount from the estimated cost of repairing the vehicle, the company will reimburse the remaining cost. You have to pay the deducted amount by yourself for repair.

In case of theft, the deductibles will be deducted from your vehicle’s depreciated amount and reimbursed.

As this covers almost the whole vehicle, it is the most expensive insurance coverage you can purchase. Still many purchase this policy to reduce the cost they have to pay in case of accidents.

The amount that you have to pay monthly or yearly depends on the model of your vehicle and the cost of it and its part. Higher the amount, the higher the monthly payment.

  • Collision insurance

This insurance helps you pay for the repairing or the replacement of the vehicle parts that were damaged due to collision. This insurance covers if the vehicle crashes into another vehicle, an object (tree, wall), or rolling or falling over.

This policy does not cover and reimburse you if the vehicle is stolen or vandalized. The insurance company will not be paying your medical bills or any other person’s medical bills involved in the accident.

Purchasing this insurance coverage is not mandatory if you own the vehicle, but becomes compulsory if the vehicle is leased or financed.

You will be selecting the deductible amount when purchasing the policy. This will be deducted from the total cost of repairing, which you will have to pay. The remaining insurance company will reimburse.

Collision coverage has a maximum value the company will be paying. That is the value of your car after depreciation.

Amount paid monthly or yearly is calculated depending on the model and the cost of the parts of the vehicle.

  •  Liability Insurance

This insurance covers medical and legal expenses of other’s injuries or damages to other’s properties, due to your mistake. In almost all countries, the drivers must carry one.

Liability insurance is of two types:

  • Bodily injury liability coverage

This insurance covers the medical bills of the other person involved in an accident that happened because of your fault.

It also helps pay legal fees if the driver is sued.

  • Property damage liability coverage

If you happened to damage another person’s property by accident, this coverage would pay for it.

This policy does not cover your medical expenses or the damages to your car.

There are limits the insurance company will pay for an accident, and you have to choose it when purchasing. The options will be provided by the insurer and if the limit exceeds, you have to pay the extras.

The amount to pay monthly or yearly depends on the coverage you have purchased and the limit the insurer has to pay. The higher the coverage limit, the higher the payment.

  • Uninsured and underinsured coverage

This insurance covers you and your vehicle when the other driver whose at fault, does not have enough liability coverage or ran away.

The policy pays for your medical bills and the bills of people in your vehicle, and the damages to the vehicle.

This insurance policy is not available in some countries and it is optional to have this coverage in many countries.

The monthly or yearly payment depends on the place where you live. In places where hit and run are high, the payment will be high.

  • Medical Payment Coverage

Regardless of who caused the accident, this insurance covers your and your passenger’s medical expenses. The coverage pays the doctor or hospital fee, X-ray and surgery bills, ambulance service fee, and nursing fee.

There is a limit your insurer will pay, and you will be selected when purchasing. You will be paying the extra cost.

This coverage is not available in all countries and is optional.

Electric bikes vs Traditional bikes

Electric bikes are gaining more popularity in many countries. Because of its many features that are lacking in traditional bikes, its demand has hiked up, along with its price.

Many manufacturers manufacture electric bikes and have many unique features, and adding more.

Though electric bikes are prototyped like traditional bikes, they vary in function. Traditional bikes have pedals and the rider has to pedal his way through. It is powered by human power and no assistance in pedaling. Electric bikes have motors that control the movement of the bike and assist the rider in pedaling. Even people with special medical conditions can ride an electric bike, but that person will not be able to ride a traditional bike.

Hiking in the mountains can be done with less effort when riding electric bikes. As there is pedal assistance, electric bikes can be used to climb the hill with less effort. Whereas in traditional bikes, you have to walk up there, if the road is steep.

Electric bikes can be accessed on your smartphone and use the apps to track your path, fitness training, GPS, and more.

Electric bikes are heavy as it carries motor and battery inside it. Even the frames and pedals are heavier than in traditional bikes, as they are made with quality products and manufactured stronger. To carry one in steps could be tiring, whereas traditional bikes are easy and lightweight as they do not have any internal gadgets in them.

Electric bikes cost much more than traditional bikes. Due to the high competition among the manufacturers in inventing and developing electric bikes, they try to use quality products to manufacture them with the latest technology available. Thus increasing in price. Traditional bike manufacturers have fewer competitions and therefore mo new insertion in them.

Though electric bikes are pricey and heavy, it has more features and user friendly. Due to this, traditional bikes have deteriorated greatly while electric bikes’ demand has hiked up.

Why are electric bikes so expensive?

Electric bikes are classy and stylish. They are comfortable and convenient too, as they have many rider-assisting features. These added features and convenience add more cost to the bike. Here are reasons for the electric bikes to hike in price;

  • Expensive batteries

Batteries are a vital part of the electric bike. They determine how far your bike will go without charging. It gives power t the bike’s motor to function and control. Though there are cheaper batteries available in the market, expensive ones last longer and have a long lifespan.

The raw materials used in expensive batteries cost more thus increasing the price of the batteries. Special care is taken in manufacturing these costly batteries to give a long life span and range.

  • Motors

Motors are essentially important as batteries. They convert electric energy to mechanical energy. Motor controllers control the amount of energy flowing into the motors from the battery, using the effort the ride makes.

The price of the motor depends on the quality and the type of motor used in electric bikes.

  • Cost of engineering

The cost to build the bike and new insertion would cost the company, as many attempts would have failed before and would have cost the manufacturers a lot. Thus successful completion costs are higher.

  • Quality of the products

Many other parts in the bikes are expensive as it provides great service. The handlebars, pedals, chains, brakes, frames, etc. are expensive because they are made with quality products to compete with the better servicing bikes.

Manufacturers are making better parts using quality materials, to provide an excellent ride. Thus increasing the whole cost.

  • Research and development

Before manufacturing an item, it goes through many processes. Research is one of the first things they are doing. Knowledge about the item and the raw materials used is important to select the raw materials for production. Knowing the raw materials will help you select the best one with higher productivity. It affects the overall functioning of the item.

After researching manufacturers with the help of engineers, will develop the product’s performance using new techniques.

Designing unique models will increase the demand for them.

Should I insure my electric bike?

Yes and no. It depends on how expensive it is for you.

Electric bikes are more costly than traditional bikes as it is providing more functions and features. Quality and expensive materials are used in making these electric bikes. Its parts cost more; like batteries and motors. Due to this, there is more theft reporting regarding battery stealing.

Insurance gives me coverage for your bike and its parts. And if the bike is damaged in an accident, they cover it too.

As this expensive vehicle and its parts would cost you to repair or replace, it is a good choice to insure your electric bike. But if you can afford it, and you do not want to insure, you do not have to.

In many countries, you can insure your electric bikes. But it is optional, but the safer choice for your expensive electric bike.

What are the consequences of using a damaged battery on an eBike

eVehicles By developing eVehicles, the use of petrol and diesel is reducing. Thus, providing environment-friendly vehicles. It is more fun and space-saving to ride bikes.

But the batteries used in them cannot be fully called environment friendly. eBike made putting together some raw materials from the ground. If disposing of the batteries is not done correctly, they threaten the environment. The chemicals would start to drain into the ground and mix with soil and water.

Types of eBike batteries available

The battery is one of the main components you must pay attention to when buying an eBike. It powers up the motor, starts the bike, and switches on the integrated lights attached. It affects the bike’s overall performance, and it is important to know your bike’s battery. The followings are the batteries commonly used in eBikes:

  • Lead Acid batteries

Lead Acid batteries are large and heavy. They offer low power output and have low capacity compared with batteries of the same size and weight. But these batteries are very cheap compared to other batteries.

  • Nickel Cadmium batteries

Nickel Cadmium batteries are strong. By maintaining efficiently, you can use the batteries for a long time. Compared with lead acid batteries, they provide more capacity but less than that lithium batteries.

Nickel Cadmium batteries are expensive and have lower power density. Even when not used, the battery will be draining in 24 hours.

Due to the factor that the cadmium used in these batteries is not environment friendly as it pollutes the environment. Demand for this type of battery is decreasing gradually.

  • Nickel-metal Hydride batteries

Nickel-metal hydride batteries are better than lead acid and nickel-cadmium batteries. Though they, too, drain the charge, their durability is better than nickel-cadmium batteries.

They heat up quickly, even with little use, and are more expensive than nickel-cadmium batteries.

  • Lithium-ion batteries

Lithium-ion batteries are more durable and last longer. With lower weight than other batteries, they produce more power output. About 90 percent of eBikes are using lithium-ion batteries to power up. Thus, this is the battery that has increased in demand.

Lithium-ion batteries need protection as they are inflammable. Considering its nature, manufacturers always have foolproof to avoid accidents.

Lithium-ion batteries are the best choice for eBikes, even though they are expensive in terms of weight, range, and longevity.

There are three types of lithium-ion batteries, they are:

  • Lithium-ion Polymer batteries

Due to the presence of polymers in lithium-ion polymer batteries, they can be shaped differently through different processes. They do not need highly safe casings like other lithium-ion batteries.

They do not contain any liquids, thus less vulnerable and high stability.

  • Lithium Manganese batteries

Lithium manganese batteries are the latest lithium batteries on the market. They have higher durability, longevity, and range than other lithium-ion batteries.

  • `Lithium cobalt batteries

Lithium cobalt batteries have a higher energy density than lithium-ion batteries and provide maximum power.

It is light and reliable.

Factors damaging the battery of eBike.

Batteries generally store chemical energies that will convert into electric energy when using electric devices. Just like many portable electric devices, e-vehicles, too, require batteries. eBikes too power up the motor using the energy stored in its batteries. To operate Ebikes, they design and develop different types of batteries. The energy stored reduces gradually with electric devices, as does in eBikes.

Like all batteries, these batteries need charging when their current flow has decreased to the minimum. Every eBike has its charging cord to use when charging.

Over time, batteries’ health and lifespan drop due to many factors. Here are some of them:

  • Exposure of batteries to extreme weather-

When exposing the batteries to heavy rain or extreme heat, chances are high for the battery to be damaged.

If the water enters the battery, it is nearly impossible to get it out. This will gradually lead to your battery malfunctioning.

The battery’s charge would reduce too soon when exposed to extreme heat. If you keep the battery on too long heat, it will ooze off its components, thus damaging the battery.

  • Using alternative ways to charge the battery-

When charging eBikes, use the charging cord that comes with it. And once in a while, it is better to disconnect the battery from the bike and charge directly. But one will use an alternative way to charge the battery after losing the charging cord or in a situation where you cannot connect your bike to the charging unit. But using these alternatives too long may result in battery damage. Try to get a charging cord if you lose it as soon as possible. Or try charging your bike’s battery, if it is low, after every ride.

  • Manufacturing defaults

When manufacturing batteries in bulk, chances are one or two would be incomplete or have defaults. Before attaching the battery to your bike, it would go through many tests that would analyze the battery thoroughly. So chances are very low for your bike’s battery to have manufacturing defaults. Read through the instructions very carefully, and charge to the maximum point the first time, following the instructions. If you notice any difference in the charging or the longevity of the charge, contact your seller.

  • Overcharging

When the bike is charging, check in now and then. Remember to disconnect when the charging is complete, and do not leave the bike connecting to the plug for days. Overcharging would damage your battery, and it might explode.

What to do with the damaged eBike’s battery?

Using the battery for a long time wholly depends on the condition of the battery and how often it runs. Even with high longevity, batteries don’t last long. You should dispose of it when the battery’s life span ends. Or, more often or not, they are damaged before their life span ends.

Damaged batteries are not safer to keep around. With an eBikes battery that is large, one might wonder what to do with it. Many consumers have these questions in them.

Firstly, remove it from the bike, and if it is heavily damaged, use a glove to protect your hands from touching any liquids that are leaking. Try to clean the battery case and avoid more damage to the motor and system.

The damaged battery is hazardous and is not advisable to keep around flammable objects. If the battery is oozing off, keep it in a place where it won’t stain.

Put it in a plastic bag and seal it carefully. Keep it away from children and store it in a place free from heat and water.

You can contact the retailer you bought your bike’s battery from and inform them, or you drop it off in their store. The retailer will make sure to send it for recycling.

Particles that remain when you recycle the batteries which can manufacture other products.

Can you repair your eBike’s battery?

   Yes and no, it depends.

It costs you lower than the replacement and increases the battery life. By not replacing the battery with a new one, you are reducing electronic waste, thus helping the environment. The worn-out and damaged cells can be inside the battery casing. Local repair shops can not repair these batteries. It needs expertise in the field and is very dangerous.

It is more difficult to repair low-quality batteries, and sometimes repairing is impossible. Tightly closed Batteries can be challenging, as opening them would damage the case itself.

Most electronic items like computers, laptops, and phones are not repairable, and the manufacturers don’t have the right to repair them. It applies to eBikes too. Many manufacturers argue that it is unsafe to repair the batteries as they are hazardous and harm one’s life.

Therefore, one should consider the pros and cons before taking the bike’s battery to repair.

How to protect your eBike’s battery?

The battery is an important part of the bike. The bike’s functions rely on the power supplied by the battery. Though the motor controls the bike, the battery supplies the power to the motor. And it is vital to protect the bike’s battery. Here are a few ways you can follow to preserve the batteries:

  • Park or store the bike in a dry place

When pulling up your bike, always search for a dry place where no form of water would get into your bike’s battery. Water will not only damage your bike’s battery but also affect the motor.

Remember to check the roofing when storing your bike for the night or for too long. Check whether the rainwater has any means of entering your bike.

  • Never try to open the battery

If you happen to see any faults in the battery, take it to a mechanic, do not try to open it, and find what the matter is. It would affect the battery’s function. If the battery’s sealing is not tight, it would also lead to battery leakage and affect the motor.

  • Park in a shadowy place

As adverse sunlight would damage the battery, try not to park in a place where the sunlight directly falls on for a long time. You can try  to at least cover the battery with clothing if you cannot find a shadowy place and will be going for too long.

  • Try charging completely and not too often

You can try to charge your bike completely, and do not disconnect it now and then. Take time to charge it up completely. Try not to charge after every ride when the charge is at10 to 15 percent.

The battery’s health deteriorates when you charge too often and not fully.

  • Store your bike precisely after the vacation

If you are not using your bike for a long time, like months, charge your battery fully before storing it away, as it gradually drains. Remove the battery from the casing and store it in a safe place with low heat and no water leaks. This would ensure no leakages.

  • Do not overload your bike

Adding more weight to the bike when traveling is energy-consuming and damages the bike’s battery. Try to take fewer loads when climbing up and going too far.

  • Use quality tires

Low-quality tires may be bumpy on roads that are not smooth, thus shaking the battery too much and damaging it.

What are the consequences of using a damaged battery on eBikes?

As batteries are vital for the eBike to operate, it is important to protect them from damage. Even with so many protective covers protecting, batteries still get damaged, and you should take measures to protect them. Using a damaged battery on the eBike may destroy the vehicle.

Using a damaged battery on your bike may disrupt the vehicle’s control. The bike would have a problem operating the bike. It would not start up properly, and the control may fail in the middle of the ride. Remember to check the battery if you have any starting problems.

If you are using your bike with a damaged battery connected to it, it might fire up. When the battery is damaged, its heat resistance will break, resulting in a fire when used often. Try to stop now and then to cool it off if you fear having a damaged battery.

We can take precautions when making batteries and sealing them tightly with safety panels. But sometimes, the batteries are damaged because of adverse actions and leaks. This may corrupt the battery case and seep through the sensitive components. Thus damaging the motor of the bike. When you are not using the bike for months, remove the battery as it may leak due to the chemical reaction and result in the breakdown of the bike.

Batteries may be expensive to replace, but mutilating the whole bike is disastrous. Check the bike’s battery now and then for the longevity of the battery life. Follow the precautions to protect your bike’s battery and if you find your battery damaged, dispose of it.

Be careful when disposing of the battery, as it might harm the environment when disposed of inappropriately. It is flammable and starts up a fire when left in the heat. Follow the steps and dispose of them carefully.

Remember not to touch the battery that is damaged heavily.

Conclusion

It is not advisable to ride the eBike when the battery is damaged. It might result in disruption of your ride or deteriorating the whole bike. Or worse, starting a fire up and fully burning the whole bike.

It is better to check your battery often to avoid these revolting outcomes. If you see your battery damaged, immediately dispose of it safely to avoid harming the environment or anything surrounding it. And replace it with the same battery type and model.

Do not ever try to ride the bike with a damaged battery; if you can, avoid it and replace it soon.

Though the batteries are expensive, it is not worth forfeiting the whole bike.

Is it worth buying electric bikes?

From the beginning of time, our purpose to travel has vastly changed. From the need to want to enjoy, traveling purposes changed, and so did the means. People used to walk until they started taming animals like horses and oxen. With the introduction of vehicles, the use of animals has subdued greatly.

Bicycles were introduced to replace the use of animals which has its drawbacks. The first bicycle introduced had only wheels and handlebars to direct the bike. It had no means of making the bike move forward and had to kick the ground now and then to keep moving. It was dangerous as I lacked control.

Though it irked people’s interest In this new invention at first, it was subdued as it was not safe and lacked the controlling power. Later new parts like pedals, brakes, tires, and chains were introduced to this model to overcome the problems they were having.

Electric motors and batteries for the bike were patented in the 19th century but only gained popularity when reintroduced a century later. Because motor vehicles were all over, motor and battery parts were expensive and weighed a lot, electric bikes did not hike in the 19th century. As batteries and motors were developed using lighter materials and costed low, they gained popularity a century later.

Two decades later, electric bikes have more features developed, and many are on their way. Batteries and motors got lighter, pedal assistance and sensors, battery level, and speed monitoring are a few of them.

With electric vehicles gaining more popularity due to their environmentally friendly features, motor vehicles using petrol and diesel, are going down in demand. Electric bikes hike up in sales, as it is convenient and easy to maneuver. But is it worth it? Considering the following questions and answering them you can find out if it is worth it.

Can you afford it?

One of the main things to consider before planning to buy an electric bike is to know about its price. They are expensive, and their parts too cost a lot. The best quality bikes with the techiest services are much more expensive.

Due to the factor that electric bikes should have more longevity than traditional bikes, all their parts are manufactured using high-quality products that cost more to the production company. The frames, pedals, throttle, and brakes give their best services and are easy to control.

Due to the high price of parts like motors and batteries, rise in battery theft has increased. Therefore, know that replacing or repairing them would be pricey too. If you are considering ensuring your bike after purchasing them, you can worry less.

As electric bikes are expensive, you have to park or store them in a safe place away from extreme weather and theft. But also with foldable features in some electric bikes, you can store them inside your home in a corner when not in use. And by removing the battery you can store it in a safe place.

Are you an aesthetic person?

If yes, electric bikes will be a good choice if you are not against getting some help in pedaling now and then. If you love cycling and spend your weekends hiking, electric bikes will help you go to new places and explore them using apps that let you track and GPS.

With the pedal assisting feature available in electric bikes, you can climb up using less effort on your side. You can adjust the control option you want and choose between how much support you want in pedaling. If you want to experience the ride of a traditional bike, you can choose to completely off the pedal assistance and ride with only human power.

Electric bikes help you be fit and healthy while commuting and arrive at your workplace with less sweat.

Electric bikes can be driven by people with special medical conditions too, and enjoy the feeling of riding bicycles. People with heart disease that does not allow them to ride a traditional bike, can ride this, as the acceleration of the heart is low when riding electric bikes. Even older people can ride in it and with the pedal assistance and be healthy.

With the busy life we are leading, we need some sort of physical activity to keep us healthy, physically and mentally. By riding the electric bike you can have the convenience of riding a motorbike and also train like you would on a traditional bike. By riding you can sweat a lot and avoid getting serious illnesses like; cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, and mental disorders.

Do you wish to avoid traffic and crowd?

An electric bike is a perfect option if you are living in a busy city, and the road is always jamming. You can commute to work sweat-free and faster, avoiding the crowded subways and jammed roads, using bicycle lanes.

You can also save on fuel charges that you would need to drive your vehicle to work. Though you have to charge your bike, it costs you lower.

Going over to the grocery stores and visiting your friends on the jammed road is no more misery. These electric bikes can make even boring routines like visiting grocers enjoyable.

Crowded subways and jammed traffic, are not a pleasant experience. Finding your way and moving through the packed subways would exhaust and tire you. And being struck in traffic every single day can exhaust you physically and mentally drain you and affect your productivity greatly.

By riding the electric bike to places you can take it, you can avoid it and enjoy the traffic-free ride. And thus, improving your productivity.

Do your friends own it?

Weekends and holidays are best for going on hiking and trekking. If you and your friends share quality times together on hiking trips, and they own electric bikes, it is your cue to own one. You would not want to be left behind when your friends pedal faster or slow them down for you to catch them up.

It can make you feel left out when they have electric bikes and they can climb the steep road with less effort while you have to walk them up and down. To keep up with your mates you can buy one and they will include you on long trips and rides.

Are you considering saving nature by going green?

Automobiles use fuels like petrol and diesel that are taken from the ground. An increase in automobiles results in an increase in extracting them. These vehicles also pollute the atmosphere by exhausting poisonous gases. This is harmful to mother nature and electric vehicles are substituting fueling automobiles.

Electric bikes use batteries to give power to the motor which controls the bike. These bikes need charging that uses electrical power, which is low in quantity.

It does not produce harmful smoke or create noises like motor vehicles. Electric bikes are environment-friendly and user-friendly. It provides safety ride and gives you the best experience.

Are you looking for ways to reduce your work stress?

After a long stressful week, everyone wants to have a peaceful weekend. A day in your home in pj’s, or going on a long ride lets you calm your nerves. The wind on your face, howling in your ears and the sounds of nature away from the busy city can work miracles. If you hope to enjoy your weekends with nature, enjoying them and clicking photos, an electric bike is a good choice.  It lets you save the memories, and by helping you ride them on narrow bumpy roads where your traditional bikes or cars could not take you.

Strong and wide tires give more traction, allowing you to ride through bumpy and steep roads. Riding a bike on a stressful day to cool off works a miracle, and boost you up.

If you are having a bad day or if you feel messed up and want to avoid everyone, just take a bike and pedal your way as far as you can. You will notice a big difference when you return.

Do you love cycling?

From young children to older people, we all love cycling. We spent our evenings and weekends street riding and racing them with our friends.  Did the feeling run away or do you still have it in you?

Many still love cycling and their busy schedules, personal life or medical conditions does not let them ride. For them, electric bikes can come in handy. They do not have to invest time into riding them but can use in your daily life routine. To commute, grocery shop, and go on outings, you can ride them and enjoy your ride.

If you own a traditional bike and you are against electric bikes because you feel as if it does not do justice to traditional bicycles, you surely have to try one. Because the electric bike is the same as the traditional bike with few features added to them. They can perform just like traditional bikes if you chose to.

How to pick the best electric bike?

From the time electric bikes were reintroduced, many manufacturing companies have started manufacturing electric bikes.  To stand out among the crowd, each manufacturer with the help of engineers is trying to develop and invent new parts to add to the bike. It would be really confusing to select the bike that best suits you. Following are the aspects to consider before picking your best pickup:

  • Value

Electric bikes are expensive and it is because of the quality materials used to produce them and the controlling features it provides. But there are bikes that are overpriced and provide little service.

  • Unique features it provides

There are many bikes providing different and unique services. Many are copycats and do not provide the best service. Thoroughly research, and learn what they provide and how best are they.

  • How well it rides

Though electric bikes are swift and comfortable, low-quality bikes don’t last long. They might have weaker motor systems and batteries. Ask anyone who owns that brand you are thinking of buying has the capacity they promise to have.

  • What is the battery type?

One of the main aspects of electric bikes is it’s the battery as it decides how long a bike can go without charging in between. They are also of different weights and made using different materials. Check if it is using the best battery.

  • How well is the controlling motor

The motor of the electric bike is another main part that determines the quality of the bike. It controls the performance of the bike. If the motor used is of low quality, chances are it would soon be standing in front of a repair shop. Know to make motors what quality materials they are using.

  • Know the manufacturer

Try to find out about the manufacturers and know how unique their products are or what quality products they have. Learning about the materials used in manufacturing electric bikes and searching for their functionality and durability, will convey the bike’s performance.

  • Extras

Manufacturers try marketing their products using another product. Sometimes the extras won’t make any sense. Check whether they are useful or not.

  • Their competitor

Electric bike manufacturers all compete with each other and add features that would get their sales up by satisfying the customers. Know what services are best and better than their competitors or if they could add more.

What are the drawbacks of owning an electric bike?

Electric bikes may be convenient and easy, but it has drawbacks too. They are:

  • Expensive

As electric bikes are expensive, not everyone can afford them. Though they are cheaper than automobiles, it’s much more expensive than a traditional bike. People with a limited and lower wage will substitute commuting by electric bike with taking public transportation.

  • Disposal of battery

Though electric bikes are environmentally friendly, their batteries are not. By extracting the raw materials from the ground, manufacturers make batteries, and disposing of them after their lifespan ends, is crucial. Dispose of it taking special care.

Riding with a damaged battery will result in malfunctioning of the motor and bike, or result in fire due to excess heat.

If you happen to see the battery damaged, you still have to be careful when handling it. You should not keep leaking or heating batteries inside the house, but out and away where it won’t harm anyone. Take them to recycle and hand them over with plastic covers sealing them.

  • Weight

The electric bike weighs much more than the traditional bike. Its extra gadgets like batteries and motors add weight to the already weighing bike. The frame and pedals weigh higher in electric bikes than in traditional bikes, as they use strong and high-quality products to make them.

It can exhaust the one carrying it, even with the battery removed.

Conclusion

Though there are many benefits to owning an electric bike, there are also drawbacks to consider. But the features electric bikes possess are greater when compared to these minute drawbacks. Buying an electric bike is worth it if one has the need or want for it and can afford it.

For people who are old and with medical conditions and want to experience the ride on a bicycle, this can be a great choice.

If you are not a person who goes out trekking and hiking seldom and does not enjoy the outdoors much, buying an electric bike is not a good option.

Do eBikes charge while pedaling

Types of eBike.

There is an ongoing debate as to which classification electronic bike is classified – a bicycle or a motorcycle. Due to this, organizing electronic bikes is complicated. Some types are classified under motorcycles, while others under bicycles. Classification of electronic bikes differs from country to country.

Despite these facts, electronic bikes are classified based on the power and the control system the bike delivers:

  • Pedal-assist
  • Power on demand

With pedal assist, the bicycle’s motor is controlled through pedaling. These bikes are known as pedelecs. These pedelecs have inbuilt sensors to detect the speed and the force of pedaling. Using these data assists the efforts of the rider.

With power on demand, the motor is operated using the throttle… A throttle is usually used in motorcycles and scooters to activate and control the motor’s power.

Using the above classification, electronic bikes are classed as follows:

  1. Electronic bikes with pedal-assist only
  2. Electronic bikes with pedal assist and power on demand
  3. Electronic bikes with power on demand only

  • Electronic bikes with pedal-assist only

Mostly electronic bikes with pedal assistance are known as pedelecs. But there are two types of electronic bikes: Pedelecs and S-pedelecs.

Pedelecs

Pedal-assist electronic bikes stimulate only when the rider starts pedaling. It helps the rider when he is struggling: like when riding up a hill or struggling against a headwind. These types of electronic bikes are helpful for people living in mountainous regions. It is beneficial to people with leg injuries and heart problems.

Pedelecs are classified under bicycles and not under motorcycles or mopeds. These electronic bikes have low-powered electric motors, and the maximum speed is relatively low.

The pedal assistance stops when it has reached the full distance or maximum production of power.

S-Pedelecs

These pedelecs have a motor more powerful than the pedelecs, and pedal assistance is unlimited. It does not have a limit on where pedal assists work. Therefore, these types of pedelecs fall under the motorcycles and mopeds. You have to register the bike and wear a helmet when riding them in some countries.

  • Electronic bikes with pedal assist and power on demand

Manufacturers nowadays are including both the pedal-assist and power-on-demand in electronic bikes to increase the distance per charge.

Using the electric bike conversion, you could turn your non-electric bikes into electric bikes.

  • Electronic bikes with power-on-demand only.

Using throttle, usually on the handgrip, you can control the motorbikes and mopeds. Electronic bikes use the same technology to power on-demand electronic bikes to manage their electronic motor. Usually, these electronic bikes have more powerful engines than the pedelecs.

The rider of these classes of electronic bikes can use only the pedaling or the electric motor by controlling the throttle. Or the rider can use both the pedaling and the electric motor.

Power-on-demand electronic bikes come with pedals or are pedal-free; to this factor, they can hardly be categorized as bicycles. Therefore it is classed under motorbikes and mopeds.

Benefits of pedaling

To lead a healthy lifestyle, one should be physically and mentally healthy. Regular physical exercise would make one physically fit and mentally healthy. It protects one from serious illnesses like cancer, arthritis, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. It also acts as a stress buster.

Cycling is one of the cardio exercises that involve the whole body. One could attain the desired health result by cycling two to four hours a week.

When we say cycling, we know it is about pedaling your way through the road. There are many physical and mental health benefits that one benefits from pedaling. A few of them are as follows:

  • It helps to decrease the stress level
  • Improves joints flexibility
  • Strong bones
  • Increases stamina
  • Decreases body fat
  • Reduces anxiety and depression
  • Improve coordination

Everyone can enjoy a ride, from small children to older people. It is not complicated or complex. It’s quite easy, and once you learn to ride a bicycle, you don’t forget it ever. With a low impact and low cost, you can enjoy your weekends on long rides with your peers.

Pedaling is a good exercise for the whole body. The muscles in your arms, thighs, and calves tighten and strengthen when you pedal. It improves the joints’ mobility and lets you have strong bones.

Pedaling not only physically strengthens you but also makes you make mentally fit. The rush of air on your face and a racing heart helps you calm your nerves. Relieving your anxiety and depression helps you with a healthy heart. Like many cardio exercises, cycling protects you from serious mental illnesses and acts as a stress buster.

New inventions encourage people to pedal in the convenience of their homes. Older people feared riding outside would cause injuries, and badly they could t from this invention—this invention mentioned courageous even the people inside to lead healthier lives.

Origin of pedaling

The bicycle was first introduced to replace domesticated animals like horses, oxen, and donkeys, to travel far. The first model had two wheels and a handlebar to direct the wheel. The rider had to kick the ground now, and the bicycle was moving. Though it was the show’s star initially, it soon lost its spotlight as it had many drawbacks.

Decades later, French inventors: Pierre Lallement, Pierre Michaux, and Ernest Michaux developed prototypes with pedals attached. Initially, the pedals were designed to attach to the front wheel. Though the rider was free from kicking the street to keep moving, still the ride was rough. Still, the insertion of pedaling into the bicycle made the bicycle’s invention successful.

Developing brakes and tires gave riders more control of the bicycle.

Electronic bikes got patents in the 19th century. But the demand for electronic bikes increased in the later part of the 20th century. Over the two decades, demand for electronic bikes has improved vastly.

Electronic bikes with less effort on pedaling are introduced. This ensures people with special medical conditions enjoy a nice ride. With less or no effort on their knees and legs, they can experience the bicycle ride.

As there are many health benefits from cycling, cardio machines with pedaling have been introduced. They have different levels of pressure exertion, that one could adjust accordingly to suit their preferences.

Features in electronic bikes

Electronic bikes are fashioned similarly to traditional bikes, adding more features to the convenience of the rider. Some features that electronic bikes possess in excess are as follows:

  • Efficient motor

Electronic bikes vary from traditional bikes because of their motor. Thus providing an efficient and smooth ride. You can climb the hills with your bike effortlessly, thanks to the motor.

  • Charging

You don’t need any fuel or charge to ride a traditional bike, and it depends on the pressure exerted on the pedal. But electronic bikes need charging to power up the motor.

  • Foldable

Most electronic bikes can be foldable. This feature allows one to carry at his own convenience. You can avoid the parking problem, and it would simply fit in the trunk of your car.

  • Connects smartphone

One of the new features added to the electronic bikes is connecting your smartphone. By connecting your smartphone to your bike, you can use GPS, maps, and health trackers.

  • Wider tires

Wider tires give better traction than electronic bikes, and the rider can ride longer distances with greater speed.

  • Integrated light

Some electronic bikes have an integrated lighting system included in them. This would turn on when you start the bike. Even if it is not included, you could attach your own bike lights that are available on the market.

  • Locking batteries

With the rise in demand for electronic bikes, the demand for electronic bike batteries has increased. Manufacturers are adding new features as a solution to the existing problem. With the introduction of a locking system, bike batteries are safe.

You could lock your battery in and remove it to charge. After removing your battery, the weight of the bike decreases. You can remove it when you want to carry your bike through the steps.

Does pedaling charge the electronic bikes?

Pedaling the traditional bike or the electronic bike, propels it to move forward. Thus it does not automatically charge your electronic bikes. But there are bikes that let you use the pedaling energy to charge up your electronic bikes.

Technology with regenerative braking lets you charge your electronic bike’s battery through braking. A sensor in brakes triggers the motor to use the energy exerted while pedaling to recharge its own battery. It is more common in electric cars than in bikes.

Though it is possible to charge your electronic bike’s battery while pedaling, the income is lower. Example: you need to ride 10km to charge 1km worth of charge.

Are electronic bikes eco-friendly?

From the dawn of time till now, humans have moved from place to place. With time developing, they started taming animals like oxen, horses, and donkeys to take them places. With time, vehicles started emerging; thus, traveling became easier and more convenient. Now we can travel places with ease and comfort and in a shorter period of time.

With this, the environment started to get polluted, increasing the need for more infrastructure. Roads are built, clearing the trees. Fuels were needed to generate motor vehicles, and taking them in abundance reduces the natural resources. These motor vehicles emit smokes that are poisonous and taint the atmosphere.

Manufacturers of automobiles are trying new inventions and developing them to solve these environmental problems. Hybrid cars, electronic cars, and bikes are developing, thus reducing the use of petrol and diesel. And also to avoid the smokes that emit when driving.

Electronic vehicles use electricity to charge up, hence decreasing the use of petrol and diesel. Electronic bikes come under electronic vehicles that help the environment to clean up.

By using electronic bikes for short trips and your daily needs, you can help the environment to clean up.

In many developed countries, riding an electronic bike has increased due to its comfortability and style. People use it to ride to work, supermarkets, and outings. With time, demand for electronic bikes would hike up as many countries are trying to go green. Thus completely cleaning the motor vehicles that use up fuels and emit smoke.

Future of electronic bikes

As it is more convenient and environmentally friendly, demand for electronic bikes increases. And in near future, the demand will soar. Manufacturers, with the assistance of scientists and engineers, are developing new inventions to make it a more convenient way of transport.

Electronic bikes were reintroduced to the market, including many novel ideas. And many are coming in the future. A few developments that we could see in the near future are as follows:

  • Lightweight batteries

The production of lightweight batteries would reduce the overall weight of the bike. And also, it would help the rider to carry one when going out on long trips.

  • Long lasting batteries

Charge in the electronic bikes decreases soon. Long-lasting batteries would encourage people to go on longer trips and trekking.

  • Lightweight materials in production

Electronic bikes are heavier when compared to traditional bikes, and it is exhausting for the person carrying them. It is due to the battery and the motor inside the bicycle.

Manufacturers are using materials such as aluminum and carbon to reduce the bike’s weight.

  • Integration of battery inside the bike

Rain,  dust, and dirt are damaging the battery. This new invention solves the problem. And also, this would make the bike’s appearance more attractive and graceful.
